Ruling Elders are called to stand for the peace and purity of the Church when controversy arises.

“[An Elder] must hold firmly to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.  For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers …  They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach …  Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they will be sound in the faith not devoting themselves to … the commands of people who turn away from the truth.”  Titus 1:9-14

We know it is unpleasant to contradict a fellow Christian, especially a fellow Elder.  But it’s a part of our calling to know the truth and defend it.
